VALUE DELIVERED

A new leading-edge academic facility to help attract scholars and new students alike; an expert professional electrical installation ensuring maximum dependability and code compliance; energy-efficient devices and controls to reduce energy consumption and costs; advanced voice-and-data systems for efficient communication; a high-tech data center for optimum operational efficiency of smart classrooms and other technology applications; increased aesthetic appeal from special effects lighting.

CLIENT OBJECTIVES

To reconstruct a school facility that had been destroyed on 9/11.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

When this client decided to rebuild a facility that was destroyed on 9/11, it chose Forest Electric because of the company’s comprehensive electrical contracting capabilities and its extensive experience working in New York City. Forest furnished and installed all of this 16-story facility’s voice-and-data systems. This included all horizontal cabling and the riser infrastructure. Forest also built out the 5th-floor data center with its associated cabling and installed special-effect lighting on the north- and south-facing spiral staircases. Time-clocks tie the entire building into a digital lighting control system that helps minimize energy costs. Throughout the facility, Forest installed approximately 1-million feet of category 6 cable. Between floors and within the main distribution facility (MDF), the company installed 2,000 feet of 10-gigabyte multi-mode fiber. Forest also put 25 computer-to-processor-interface (CPI) equipment cabinets in the MDF, as well as 30 CPI equipment racks, and 6,000 feet of CPI ladder rack.

SOLUTIONS

On floors two through 14, Forest furnished and installed the electrical fitout, including thousands of new, compact fluorescent lighting fixtures and individual room occupancy sensors. Connected to the building management system, the sensors turn lights on when the room is occupied and off when it is not.

BACKGROUND

Originally built in 1959, Fiterman Hall was donated to the City University of New York on behalf of the Borough of Manhattan Community College by Miles and Shirley Fiterman. The building was, however, irreparably damaged when World Trade 7 fell against it in the 9/11 attacks. The rebuilt Miles and Shirley Fiterman Hall is a 16-story building designed by the architectural firm of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and built by Hunter Roberts Construction Group. In addition to approximately 80 smart classrooms and computer laboratories, the facility houses a world-class fine arts center and a public café, as well as offices, library spaces, music ensemble rooms, and a rooftop conference center.
